Yahoo Chess and the online rooms players remember

Yahoo Chess let you find an opponent and play on a simple online board. The rooms also gave players somewhere to talk between games. If you returned regularly, familiar usernames became part of the experience.

The classic service has closed. Its mixture of casual competition and conversation explains why it still comes up when players discuss their first online games.

What was Yahoo Chess?

Chess was part of Yahoo Games, a browser-based collection that included board and card games. Players could meet opponents online without arranging a visit to a club. A two-dimensional board kept the focus on the moves.

For a new player, being able to find another game quickly was useful. Regular visitors also had the chat rooms, where a game could continue as a conversation after the result was settled.

Competition with a chat window

Online chess makes a rematch easy to arrange, provided the other player is still there. The social rooms added another reason to return: you could find people you recognized as well as a position to solve.

The journal's earlier account remembered that combination of games and conversation. It's a useful reminder that players can enjoy the company around a game alongside the result on the board.

A chess room in a song

Half Man Half Biscuit's 2008 album CSI: Ambleside includes Bad Losers on Yahoo Chess. The title puts a familiar online frustration into unusually specific musical territory.

You can read about the track in The Quietus's discussion of the band's back catalogue.
